Chutney - A taste of India
The Chutney Indian restaurant at 27 Easton Street, High Wycombe recently celebrated its first anniversary.
Opened last year by proprietors, Sarker Rahman, Syed Rahman and Sirajul Islam, the owners have worked hard to make the restaurant one of the most popular Indian restaurants in High Wycombe, attracting customers from far and wide mainly by word of mouth.
Tastefully refurbished, the 90 seat restaurant offers diners an excellent selection of Indian cuisine, including such favourites as Tandoori, Madras, Vindaloo, Korma, Masalla, Dansak, Balti and Biriyani. The chefs at Chutney are renowned for only using traditional ingredients used throughout the subcontinent of India, which is evident from the divine flavours in each of their dishes.
As a result, the restaurant has won a number of awards for its fine cuisine, presentation and service.
From the moment you enter the restaurant you are greeted warmly by the management and shown to your table, although pre-booking is advisable on Friday and weekends, their busiest nights. Whatever night you choose to dine, the atmosphere is always relaxed and the staff do their utmost to make sure every customer is looked after from the time they settle down at their table.
I went to the restaurant on Friday with my wife, Denise and our sons, Scott, 12 and Adam, 19. The waiter left us to ponder over the menu while he brought us a bottle of complimentary mineral water for the table which is customary for all diners.
We started by ordering some drinks which were reasonably priced and some papadums to nibble at while we contemplated the extensive menu.
The papadums were accompanied with a selection of delicious chutneys which we used as a dip and also to garnish some of the dishes that were to follow.
Our minds made up, we ordered some starters which included Sheek Kebab, Tandoori Lamb Chop, Chicken Puree and Lamb Tikka. The dishes were well presented and the portions more than adequate.
We added some chutney to our dishes to complement the succulent flavours and spices. Our starters complete, we moved onto the main course.
Our younger son ordered Chicken Korma, while our teenage son ordered Chicken Tikka Biriyani. I ordered a Mixed Grill (a selection of tandoori chicken, sheek kebab, lamb, chicken tikka and King Prawn) whilst my wife went for Tandoori Trout (a whole fish marinated in tandoori spices and cooked in a clay oven).
Each dish was cooked to perfection in an exotic blend of herbs and spices. We ended up trying a bit of everyone's dish, rather than asking each other what it was like.
We rounded off our meal with Kulfi, a delicious South Asian frozen dairy dessert, which comes in a variety of flavours. We chose the mango and pistachio flavours, which were deliciously smooth and creamy and the perfect finale to our culinary evening at Chutney.
The price for the meal and drinks (which included a bottle of wine, lager and lemonade) came to £80.95.
On the way out, my wife was handed a red rose with the compliments of the management. It's the personal touches, along with the outstanding food and service that make Chutney a special treat anytime of the week and I highly recommend it.
