Fat just melts away
When I asked a friend if she would have a nip and tuck, she didn't answer an emphatic "no". There was a moment of hesitation. Her reply instead was well balanced, and most probably what we all think.
"I wouldn't," she said, "but I would love to have thinner thighs."
I agreed, although my problem isn't my thighs, it's my tummy. Even when I am at my preferred weight, I don't end up with a washboard stomach - I blame having babies.
Then I told my friend that I had discovered a treatment that claims to firm up and smooth out crepe-like skin without going under the knife - the fat simply melts away. My friend sniffed at the idea, and although I didn't quite believe it, I thought I would give the treatment a try.
I went along to Mulberry's in Beaconsfield, where Avril Lunn, the medical suite manager, explained this treatment to me.
"It uses radio frequency to heat up the tissue and so melt away the fat," she said.
Basically, Accent uses dual-layer RF (radio frequency) thermotherapy and is able to heat up the tissue at two different depths. The hottest heat, 45C, penetrates up to 20mm into the tissue reaching adipose tissue and cellulite - the fatty layers. Then a lower heat penetrates to 5mm and promotes the creation of new collagen and helps tighten the skin. Once the fat has been heated up, it melts away into the lymph system and leaves the body when you go to the loo.
"It is best for those who have a little bit of loose skin, especially after having a baby, or if you have a little bit of extra flesh. The treatment can also be used on the face to give a smoother jawline", explained Avril.
It all seemed a little too good to be true, but Avril assured me she had success and showed me pictures of a woman who had it done on her stomach - and there really was a difference.
After taking measurements and polaroid pictures of my stomach, just for reference, I laid down on the couch. Avril used sweeping movements over my tummy with the special handpiece. She looked as if she was doing the ironing on my tummy. My stomach did get warm and when it was too hot for me to cope with, she just moved away from the area. The only side effect you can get from this treatment is a slight burn if you have not got an expert practitioner.
As the treatment only takes 45 minutes, you can pop in to have it done and then carry on with your day. You do not have to hide away or recuperate from surgery.
Avril recommended that you have a minimum of six treatments which I had, and I did see a result. I lost 3cm around my waist and there was an added bonus of smoothing out my stretch marks.
"The changes are not radical," said Avril. "People should not expect to get the same results as surgery." It is, simply, to give your body a smoother and tighter appearance.
Also, the effect of the treatment differs from person to person. Statistically ten to 15 per cent of people get good results, 45 per cent get average results and ten per cent get no results. Once you have lost the fat, the results last for up to two to five years.
