Playing with fire for the hospice
Walking barefoot over red hot coals burning at over 1,200 oF, is the ultimate test of mind over matter.
Around 100 people, including Big Brother stars Tracey Barnard and Nicky Maxwell, will be carrying out the walk on behalf of The Peace Hospice.
The event taking place on Thursday November 22 at the Watermill Hotel in Hemel Hempstead will involve participants walking across a 20-foot lane of burning coals.
The Peace Hospice's corporate development manager Maggie Grand said: "We have been delighted that this event has caught the imagination of our local supporters.
"The firewalk promises to be a spectacular occasion and I'm sure that there will be a lot of nervous people lining up to do the walk. The event has an 100% safety record so we're confident that everyone carrying out the walk will have a great night."
The Peace Hospice provides specialist palliative care for people from across South West Hertfordshire with cancer or other terminal illness. The care is holistic and it looks after the whole person, and their family/carers, helping with emotional and spiritual issues as well as physical symptoms. It focuses on enabling patients to live their lives to the full and providing the best quality of life when a cure is not possible.
Communications manager at the hospice Jon Michael said: "It costs £3.1m a year to provide our services and more than 75% of this is supported through charitable donations. We rely heavily on fundraising events like the firewalk to raise the income that we need to support the Hospice. All the care that we provide to our patients is free."
There will be a fire juggler and drummer attending the event and spectators are welcome to attend, with the firewalk taking place at 8.30pm.
